What you need to know
Check yourself against these “I can” statements.
- I can simplify expressions such as x² + 2x² and p × p²
- I can use the index laws to multiply and divide powers of the same letter, e.g. a³ × a² = a⁵ and x³ ÷ x² = x
- I can raise a power to a power, e.g. (p²)³ = p⁶
- I can simplify expressions with brackets and powers, e.g. x(x² + x + 4) or 3(a + 2b) − 2(a + b)
